spooling

Data buffer holding

Spooling is the process of transferring data to a temporary storage area for later processing.

In computing, print jobs spool to a queue, waiting their turn at the printer.

The term comes from the image of winding thread onto a spool—data accumulates in an orderly sequence until it can be unwound.

The document is spooling to the printer.
