spooler

Reel-filling device

A spooler is software that manages print jobs or other data by queuing them for sequential processing.

When you print a document, the spooler receives it, stores it temporarily, and feeds it to the printer in order, freeing you to continue working: The print spooler crashed and I had to restart it.

The term derives from spool, originally an acronym for "simultaneous peripheral operations online."
