spooling up

Building rotational speed

Spooling up is the process of a turbine engine or similar rotating machinery accelerating to operational speed.

The term comes from the spool-like shape of compressor and turbine sections in jet engines: The pilot waited for the engines to finish spooling up before taxiing.

Figuratively, spooling up describes any gradual buildup of energy, activity, or readiness: The campaign is spooling up for the primary season.
