counterspell
Arcane defensive response
A counterspell is a spell cast to neutralize or block another spell, common in fantasy games and fiction.
In card games like Magic: The Gathering, counterspells prevent an opponent's spell from taking effect: I held back mana to counterspell whatever he played.
The verb means to nullify magic with opposing magic.
