wire gauge
Metal strand measurement
Wire gauge is a standardized system for measuring the diameter of wire, where counterintuitively, higher numbers indicate thinner wire: 12-gauge wire is thicker than 14-gauge.
The term also refers to a tool for measuring wire thickness.
Different gauge systems exist for different applications—AWG (American Wire Gauge) dominates electrical work in the United States.
