starter motor

Cranks the engine

A starter motor is an electric motor that cranks an internal combustion engine to begin the ignition cycle.

When you turn a car's key or push the start button, the starter motor briefly spins the engine's crankshaft until combustion takes over.

Often shortened to starter: The car won't turn over—I think the starter is dead.
