electromotive force

Battery's driving push

Electromotive force is the energy per unit charge that a source—such as a battery or generator—provides to move electrons through a circuit.

Despite the name, it's measured not in force units but in volts.

Often abbreviated EMF or emf.

The electromotive force of a standard alkaline battery is 1.5 volts.
