duty cycle
Active time fraction
Duty cycle is the proportion of time a system or device operates compared to its total cycle time.
In electronics, it describes how long a signal stays on versus off: a 50% duty cycle means equal on and off periods.
The concept applies broadly—from pulse-width modulation in circuits to how often an appliance runs: The motor has a 60% duty cycle, so it needs rest periods.
