monkeypox
Viral rash disease
Monkeypox is a viral disease related to smallpox but typically milder, causing fever, rash, and distinctive fluid-filled skin lesions.
The virus spreads through close contact with infected people, animals, or contaminated materials.
First identified in laboratory monkeys in 1958, it was historically rare outside Central and West Africa until a global outbreak in 2022 prompted the World Health Organization to rename it mpox to reduce stigma and inaccurate associations with primates.
