cowpox

Cattle skin disease

Cowpox is a mild viral disease of cattle that causes pustular sores on the udders.

The virus is closely related to smallpox, and milkmaids who caught cowpox from infected cows were observed to be immune to smallpox—an observation that led Edward Jenner to develop the first vaccine in 1796.

The disease is now rare in cattle and humans.
