depopulation
Mass exodus effect
Depopulation is the reduction of a population, whether through death, emigration, declining birth rates, or deliberate policy.
The term applies to regions, cities, or countries experiencing significant population loss: Rural depopulation has hollowed out small towns across the Midwest.
Historically, depopulation sometimes refers to mass death from war, famine, or disease—or to forced removal of inhabitants.
