smallpox vaccination
Jenner's medical breakthrough
Smallpox vaccination is immunization against smallpox, a deadly viral disease that killed millions before being eradicated in 1980 through a global vaccination campaign—the first and only human disease eliminated by deliberate intervention.
The vaccine uses a related virus (vaccinia) that produces immunity without causing smallpox.
The term is historically significant: Edward Jenner's 1796 cowpox experiments gave us the word "vaccine" itself, from Latin *vacca* (cow).
