haiden
Outer shrine hall
A haiden is the worship hall of a Shinto shrine, the building where visitors pray and make offerings.
It stands in front of the honden, the inner sanctuary where the deity resides.
Most shrine visitors interact only with the haiden, approaching to clap, bow, and offer coins: We rang the bell and prayed at the haiden.
