shores

Where land ends

Shores are the land along the edge of a body of water—an ocean, lake, or river.

The word often suggests the meeting point of land and water rather than deep inland: We walked along the shore at sunset.

In the plural, shores can mean a country or region, especially poetically: distant shores, these shores.

As a verb, to shore up is to support or reinforce something at risk of collapsing: They shored up the sagging foundation.
