tide pool

Rocky shore basin

A tide pool is a small body of seawater left behind in rocky depressions along the shore when the tide recedes.

These shallow pools trap marine life—anemones, starfish, crabs, small fish—creating miniature ecosystems accessible to beachgoers: The kids spent hours exploring tide pools.

Also called a rock pool in British English.
