secretion

Cells releasing substances

Secretion is the process by which cells or glands produce and release substances—hormones, enzymes, mucus, sweat.

The word also refers to the substance itself: The secretion had a yellowish tint.

In biology, secretion is distinguished from excretion: secreted substances typically serve a function, while excreted substances are waste.
