apply

Put to use

The central meaning of the verb apply always involves contact.

When tangible things are involved, the contact is physical; when abstract things are involved, the contact is figurative.

When you apply a substance to a surface you put down a layer of it: Apply adhesive to both edges and press them together.

When you apply a skill to a problem, you use that skill to try to solve the problem.

Applying for something such as a job, a benefit, or a license, you formally request to obtain or be considered for it.

If a rule or law applies, it has relevance or force.
