running stitch

Simple in-out stitch

A running stitch is the simplest sewing stitch—the needle passes in and out of fabric at regular intervals, creating a dashed line of thread.

It's used for basic seams, gathering, basting, and decorative work.

The stitch moves quickly but isn't as strong as backstitch: She used a running stitch to baste the hem before machine sewing.
