backstitch

Strong hand-sewn line

A backstitch is a sewing stitch that doubles back on itself, with each new stitch beginning behind where the previous one ended.

This creates a strong, continuous line of stitching that won't easily pull apart.

As a verb, to backstitch is to sew using this technique: Backstitch at the beginning and end to secure the seam.
