buttonhole

Fastener's narrow opening

A buttonhole is a small slit in fabric through which a button passes to fasten a garment.

As a verb, to buttonhole someone is to detain them in conversation, often against their will—as if grabbing them by a coat buttonhole to keep them from leaving: He buttonholed me at the party and talked for an hour about his divorce.
