serger

Seam-trimming machine

A serger is a sewing machine that trims, stitches, and overcasts fabric edges in one operation, producing the finished seams found inside professional garments.

Unlike standard sewing machines, sergers use multiple threads—typically three to five—to create stretchy, durable seams that prevent fraying: I used the serger to finish the T-shirt seams.

Also called an overlock machine.
