overlocker

Seam trimming machine

An overlocker is a sewing machine that trims fabric edges while encasing them in thread, creating the stretchy, finished seams found on most commercial garments.

Also called a serger, particularly in American English.

Unlike standard sewing machines, overlockers use multiple threads—typically three or four—working simultaneously: The overlocker gives my hems a professional finish.
