sea shanties
Maritime work music
Sea shanties are work songs traditionally sung by sailors to coordinate physical labor aboard ships—hauling ropes, raising anchors, pumping bilges.
The rhythm helped synchronize group effort, with a lead singer (the shantyman) calling verses while the crew joined on the chorus.
Though the age of sail has passed, shanties persist in folk music and experienced an unexpected revival on social media: TikTok got me into sea shanties.
