art music
Composed, not improvised
Art music is music composed for attentive listening rather than dancing, background entertainment, or popular appeal.
The term distinguishes classical, orchestral, and experimental compositions from folk music and commercial pop.
Art music typically implies formal training, written scores, and performances in concert halls: She studied art music at the conservatory but plays jazz on weekends.
