a cappella

Singing sans instruments

A cappella describes vocal music performed without instrumental accompaniment.

The term comes from Italian meaning "in the manner of the chapel," referring to the unaccompanied choral tradition of church music.

It applies to everything from Renaissance sacred works to contemporary vocal groups that use only voices, sometimes imitating instruments with beatboxing and harmonies.

The group performed an a cappella version of the pop song.
