sea shanty
Maritime labor tune
A sea shanty is a work song traditionally sung by sailors aboard merchant ships.
The rhythmic call-and-response structure helped coordinate group labor like raising sails or hauling anchor: The crew sang a shanty as they worked the capstan.
Also spelled chantey or chanty.
The form saw a revival as internet music in the 2020s.
