sandworms

Subterranean desert creatures

Sandworms are burrowing marine worms found in sandy coastal sediments, commonly used as fishing bait.

The term also refers to the colossal fictional creatures in Frank Herbert's *Dune* series—massive desert-dwelling worms that produce the valuable spice melange and can be ridden by the Fremen people.

The *Dune* sandworms have become iconic in science fiction: The sandworm rose from the desert floor.
