earthworms
Garden's underground wrigglers
Earthworms are segmented worms that live in soil, aerating it as they burrow and enriching it with their castings.
They're the familiar wriggling creatures that surface after rain and get threaded onto fishhooks as bait.
Gardeners prize them as indicators of healthy soil: The compost bin was full of earthworms.
