sandworm

Dune desert dweller

A sandworm is any of various worms that burrow in sand or sandy soil, including marine polychaetes used as fishing bait.

The term gained wider currency through Frank Herbert's *Dune*, where sandworms are colossal creatures inhabiting desert planets, producing the valuable spice melange.

We dug for sandworms at low tide.
