lugworms

Sandy shore invertebrates

Lugworms are large marine worms that burrow in sand or mud along coastlines, leaving distinctive coiled castings on beaches at low tide.

They are prized as fishing bait, particularly for sea angling, and play an important ecological role by aerating sediments as they feed.

The name comes from their sluggish movement and the lug-shaped segments of their bodies.

We dug for lugworms at dawn before the fishing trip.
