ragworm

Segmented fishing bait

A ragworm is a marine worm with a segmented body and bristly projections along its sides, found burrowing in sand or mud along coastlines.

Ragworms are prized as fishing bait, particularly for sea angling: We dug up ragworms at low tide for the fishing trip.

The name comes from the ragged appearance of their many bristled segments.
