nightcrawlers

Large burrowing worms

Nightcrawlers are large earthworms, typically several inches long, that emerge from the soil at night.

They're prized as fishing bait and can often be found on lawns and sidewalks after rain or collected by flashlight in the dark.

We went out with flashlights to gather nightcrawlers for tomorrow's fishing trip.

The term sometimes appears in horror or fantasy contexts to describe creatures that hunt or prowl after dark.
