sidelines

Where coaches pace

The sidelines are the boundary lines along the sides of a playing field or court, and by extension, the area just beyond them where coaches, substitutes, and staff stand.

Figuratively, to be on the sidelines is to observe without participating: He watched from the sidelines while others made the decisions.

To sideline someone is to remove them from active participation, whether through injury or exclusion: A knee injury sidelined her for the season.
