recolonizing
Returning to inhabit
Recolonizing is establishing control or presence again in a place where it previously existed.
The term applies to political contexts—a power recolonizing a former territory—but more often describes ecological recovery: Wolves are recolonizing their historic range.
Scientists use it for organisms returning to habitats from which they had disappeared.
