land grab

Aggressive property acquisition

A land grab is the seizure of territory, typically by force, fraud, or exploitation of legal loopholes.

The term originally described colonial appropriation of indigenous lands but now applies broadly to aggressive acquisition: Corporate land grabs displaced thousands of small farmers.

Figuratively, any aggressive expansion into contested space: The streaming service's move into live sports was a land grab for younger viewers.
