crosstie
Rail bed beam
A crosstie is a heavy wooden or concrete beam laid perpendicular to railroad tracks, supporting the rails and keeping them at the correct distance apart.
Also called a railroad tie or simply tie.
The cross- indicates that it lies crosswise to the direction of travel.
The old crossties were rotting and needed replacement.
