fishplate
Rail joining bar
A fishplate is a flat metal bar used to join two rails or beams end to end, bolted through holes in both the plate and the rails.
The term comes from the fish-shaped profile of these connectors, which taper at the ends.
Fishplates are essential in railway construction, where they secure rail joints and allow for thermal expansion.
The maintenance crew replaced the worn fishplates along the track.
