pickets

Protest line walkers

Pickets are pointed stakes driven into the ground, typically as part of a fence or to secure something in place.

The word extends to people stationed outside a workplace during a strike, standing like human stakes to discourage others from entering: Union members walked the picket line for three weeks.

As a verb, to picket means to stand guard in this way, or to enclose an area with pointed stakes.

A picket fence, with its evenly spaced vertical slats, evokes images of tidy suburban domesticity.
