bronchioles

Small lung passages

Bronchioles are the smallest airways in the lungs, tiny tubes that branch from the bronchi and end in clusters of air sacs called alveoli.

They lack cartilage and control airflow through muscular walls that can constrict or relax.

In asthma, the bronchioles narrow and restrict breathing.
