left atrium

Receives oxygenated blood

The left atrium is the upper left chamber of the heart.

It receives oxygenated blood from the lungs via the pulmonary veins and pumps it through the mitral valve into the left ventricle, which then sends it out to the body.

Atrial fibrillation often originates here: The irregular heartbeat was traced to the left atrium.
