psychoneurosis
Anxiety-based mental illness
Psychoneurosis is an older psychiatric term for neurosis—a mental disorder involving anxiety, obsessive thoughts, or compulsive behavior without loss of contact with reality.
The term emphasized psychological rather than physical origins: The psychiatrist diagnosed her condition as psychoneurosis.
Now largely replaced by more specific diagnostic categories.
