neuroses
Anxiety's persistent cousins
Neuroses is the plural of neurosis, a term for mental conditions involving chronic anxiety, obsessive thoughts, or compulsive behaviors without loss of contact with reality.
The word was central to Freudian psychoanalysis and mid-twentieth-century psychiatry, though it has largely fallen out of clinical favor.
In casual use, neuroses describes persistent anxieties or hang-ups: We all have our little neuroses.
