pseudopods

Amoeba's reaching limbs

Pseudopods are temporary projections of cytoplasm that certain single-celled organisms extend for movement or feeding.

Amoebas are the classic example—they flow into their pseudopods to creep along surfaces and wrap around food particles.

The word means "false feet," and the projections do function like improvised limbs, though they can form anywhere on the cell's surface and retract just as easily.
