pre-tensioning
Stretching before loading
Pre-tensioning is a construction technique where steel cables or tendons are stretched tight before concrete is poured around them.
When the concrete hardens and the tension is released, the cables compress the concrete, making it stronger and more resistant to cracking under load.
The technique is standard in manufacturing prestressed concrete beams and slabs: pre-tensioned bridge girders, pre-tensioned floor panels.
