extraterritoriality

Laws crossing borders

Extraterritoriality is the principle that certain persons or places are exempt from the jurisdiction of the country where they're physically located.

Diplomats enjoy extraterritoriality—they can't be arrested or prosecuted by the host nation.

The term also applies to embassy grounds, military bases, and historically to foreign concessions in places like colonial-era China: The treaty granted extraterritoriality to British merchants in Shanghai.
