federal governments

Centralized state powers

Federal governments are systems where political authority is divided between a central national government and regional governments (states, provinces, or territories), each with distinct powers.

The United States, Canada, Germany, and Australia have federal governments.

This contrasts with unitary systems where central government holds primary authority: The federal government sets immigration policy, but states control education.
