power cleans

Barbell to shoulders

Power cleans are a weightlifting exercise where you explosively lift a barbell from the floor to your shoulders in one continuous motion, catching it in a partial squat.

The movement builds explosive strength and power, training the hips, legs, and back to generate force quickly.

Power cleans are standard in athletic training programs: The football team does power cleans twice a week.

The "power" distinguishes the partial-squat catch from the full squat of a regular clean.
