Tabata

Twenty-on, ten-off

Tabata is a high-intensity interval training protocol consisting of eight rounds of twenty seconds of all-out exercise followed by ten seconds of rest, totaling four minutes.

Named after Japanese researcher Izumi Tabata, whose 1996 study demonstrated its effectiveness for improving cardiovascular fitness, the format has become a staple in fitness classes and home workouts.

I did Tabata sprints on the bike this morning.

The name now applies loosely to any short, intense interval workout following a similar structure.
