potentiometer

Adjustable voltage divider

A potentiometer is a variable resistor—an electrical component that allows adjustment of resistance in a circuit.

The familiar volume knob on a stereo is a potentiometer: turning it changes resistance, which changes the signal strength.

Often shortened to *pot* in technical contexts: Replace the tone pot on your guitar.
