varistor
Surge protection component
A varistor is an electronic component whose resistance changes with voltage—high resistance at low voltage, low resistance at high voltage.
This property makes varistors useful for protecting circuits from voltage spikes: when voltage surges, the varistor conducts current away from sensitive components.
The surge protector's varistor absorbed the lightning strike.
